10-5-24  HURRICANE RELIEF UPDATE:

This update includes an updated needs list for our hurricane relief partner, Swannanoa Church.

One of the guys in our church, John Roland (and possibly a few others), is going up THIS Monday to Wednesday (October 7-9) to help Swanannoa Church clean up homes in their community. John can take whatever items we collect. You’re welcome to leave  donations on our front porch.

DAY TRIP OR MULTI-DAY SERVING
We will most definitely be planning more clean up trips and will let you know with plenty of time in advance. Swannanoa Church has a full house that can house up to 10 volunteers at a time. We also have friends, in nearby Hendersonville, where people can stay. And if you like camping, you can bring your tent and camping gear and go “camping with a purpose.” With school break coming up next weekend, families are welcome anytime to go up for the day (3 hour drive) to help with cleanup. Swannanoa Church said that we can just show up, and they’ll put us to work. For Swannanoa Church’s info and address, go to https://swan.church.

NEEDS LIST
- Adult diapers (i.e., Depends)
- Adult socks and underwear
- Tarps (for damaged roofs)
- 100 ft. extension cords
- Sump pumps
- Small generators (to keep medications cold and CPAP machines running)
- Small green camp stove propane cylinders
- Big fans

I’ve also attached a “needs list” from neighboring Marshall, NC (seriously devastated from the storm). Swannanoa could use everything on the Marshall list, as well.

Basically, right now Swannanoa DOES NOT need any bottled water, diapers, food, toilet paper, etc. They have a TON of all of these items. The stuff above and on the attached list is what they are seriously lacking in right now.

From Chad Garrett (10-1-24)
I just heard from another friend who was able to bring a van full of supplies from Greenville to Swannanoa / Black Mountain. He was able to drop off and return home by packing some gas. There is very little gas available in the Asheville area. If a gas station does have gas, it can take hours for a few gallons-cash only. We are packing our own gas. Everyone up there is in need of just nonperishable food and water. My plan is to go up there Thursday morning (10-2-24) with two truckloads and return Thursday afternoon. My son is driving his truck and I will be driving my truck. If you know of anyone that may want to drive a truck or van of supplies they are welcome to caravan with us--safer in a group in case someone breaks down. We are bringing tire patches and an air compressor--basic stuff so we can get back home safely.
GREATEST NEEDS:
This what they need most according to the fire dept and my friends there in:
  • #1 is water and infant formula
  • non perishable food--protein bars, slim jims, peanut butter, ect
  • diapers
  • powdered milk
  • sports drink powder
  • batteries, and flashlights
We are also taking propane and gasoline.

From Clif Parker (10-1-24)
I texted a friend who lives in the most affected area asking what are their greatest needs. She responded, "Food, water, diapers, gas, and cash. Finding bread has been almost impossible, gas, there's people fighitn over it. A man was stabbed last night in Ingles over a bag of charcoal. It's so crazy."
There is an Ingles distrubtion center in Swannanoa, but we're going to Spring Creek and Hot Springs this Thursday, because that area doesn't have a distribution center or even a single grocery store. We're also hoping to help Marshall, the area where I grew up (Mars Hill / Marshall). In addition to food and gas, that area also needs diapers (adult and baby), formula, dry milk, and feminine products.
